On steep cliffs overlooking the Rizzanese valley, dominating the Gulf of Valinco, the town of Sartène, rugged and folded back upon itself, prompted Merimée to exclaim: "it is the most Corsican of the towns in Corsica".
Sarte is the Corsican citadel which, since the Middle Ages, is a stopping-off point in any visit to Corsica.
