Know apparently from time immemorial, Propriano has a long history in its wake. Frequented by man right from the earliest times, it rapidly became a trading centre, as the presence of ancient remains clearly demonstrates. After the Greeks and the Carthaginians came the Romans, who settled in this little corner of paradise and gave it its name. It was not until the period 1837 to 1846, with the opening up of roads to Ajaccio, Sartene and Bonifacio that the little port develo-ped, Propriano then becam the commercial hub of the extreme south.
A hamlet of Fozzano, it was not until 1860, under Napoleon III, that the little locality of Valinco became an official Community. A few years later the church of Our Lady of Mercy was built. Today Propriano has taken its rightful place as one of the highlight of the " Isle of Beauty" and enthusiastically plays its role within the Euro-Mediterranean context. Belvedere-Campomoro, Olmeto Plage and Porto Pollo. This location is ideal for all those who want to tour around Southern Corsica. (Ajaccio and Bonifacio are only 1hr 15 mins away by car).
The commercial harbour welcomes passenger-cargo vessels unloading passengers and goods all year round. During the high season car-ferries enable visitors boarding in the ports of Marseille and Toulon to land at Propriano, the most sou-therly port in Corsica. There is also a regular all year round service between Propriano and the port of Porto Torres in Sardinia.
