The Cap Corse towers, built in the 16th century, were usually used to keep watch over the sea and the coasts. You can find round towers on the coast, but also square towers in the land, which were used to live in or to shelter. One of the most famous is the tower Barbara Da Mare which was the residence of the Genoese Governors. A lot of Romanesque churches and chapels were built in the 11th century, under the influence of a baroque Italian style: they are quite large with heavy embellishment. You can also see San Francesco Convent, built in 1520 and restored in 1711. It has been disused since 1789. In the center of Rogliano, you will find Sant'Agnellu Church, built on a terrace in the 16th century. It was extended and it got a wonderful classical façade in the 18th century. When you walk through the village, you will see numerous and authentic village houses. The oldest date back to the 15th century. The walls are made of rubble stone and their roof is double sloped and covered with Corsican slates (called "lauze"). You can also find wonderful manors called "I palazzi americani", family mansions of colonial inspiration that were built by people from the Cap Corse who became wealthy abroad. On the process, these "cousins from the New World" took over the most beautiful promontories of the Cap Corse, facing the sea, where they built their spectacular, Italianlike tombs to rest in peace in their village.
