Macinaggio, the biggest port in the Cap Corse, played an important part on numerous occasions: It has been very active since the ancient time, when the Romans used it as a military port. In 1620, the Genoese built the first real port. Between 1748 and 1753, its first rocky and wooden pier built, under the siege of the French troops lead by the Marquis de Cursay. From 1760 to 1764, it was taken by Pascal Paoli, and was kept by the Genoese until 1765. In 1571, four boats left the port to win fame in the battle of Lepante, where all the Christian countries were fighting against the Turks. At the beginning of the century, the small shelter was trading with the Italian Tuscany. The marina itself had few permanent residents, only the state workers, immigration officers and soldiers. The sailors and traders had their "magazzini" (warehouse) there, but lived in the upper village because of the everlasting incursions from the Barbary Coast. Taking its chance in the 70's, when the State was encouraging the creation of marinas, Macinaggio became the most important marina at the end of the Cap Corse; and Rogliano found a new strength thanks to this activity, the port being the main source of income.
