What is the origin of the name of Calvi? There are several theories: should preferences be given to "Calvo" from the Latin for "bald", or "Sinus Casalvi", "sinus" meaning bay, or rather the Indo European root "Cal" or perhaps the name "Cales", familiar as the name of a town in the Roman province of Campania. Traces of Roman occupation found in the north-western region of Corsica (Balagne) support this theory, which was dear to the late Canon Alberti, who mentioned it in his book: Olmia and its martyrs ("Olmia et ses martyrs"). The Vatican manuscript known as the Codex 69-33 provides a chance to learn more about the probable origins of the word Calvi. This Latin text from the XIIth century was probably rewritten on the basis of a previous text. (At the time the Citadel did not exist). This text refers to "Locus Calvi". A locus is a town that maintains its customary institutions. The Latin locative Calui from Cales perhaps gave the present-day term of Calvi.
